چکیده

A sound reproduction system usually consists of several types of loudspeakers to cater to sophisticated applications. The directivity of a loudspeaker is a measure of its efficiency in sending sounds to a particular direction instead of all directions. Demand to control the directivity of a sound reproduction system is gaining momentumwith many new designs of directional loudspeakers, including the acoustic dome, horn loudspeaker, loudspeaker array, and parametric array loudspeaker (PAL). The PAL is an application of the parametric acoustic array in air, which generates a sound beam from the interaction of ultrasonic beams. The PAL has several desired features, such as its narrow beamwidth over a wide frequency range, low sound attenuation over a long distance, and ability to reproduce perceptually near sound images. The PAL is also advantageous in using a smaller driving unit to transmit an equally narrow sound beam as compared to the conventional loudspeaker and broadside loudspeaker array. An overview of directivity control methods of the PAL is presented in this paper. In particular, acoustic models and signal processing techniques in controlling the directivity of the PAL are emphasized.

Steerable parametric loudspeaker with preprocessing methods

The emerging applications of the parametric loudspeaker, such as 3D audio playback systems, require both controllable directivity and high fidelity at the audible frequency (a.k.a. the difference frequency). Although phased array techniques have been applied and proven adequate to steer the mainlobe of a parametric loudspeaker, and preprocessing methods have been studied to reduce the harmonic ...

Controlling the perceived distance of an auditory object by manipulation of loudspeaker directivity.

This work presents a method to control the perceived distance of an auditory object by changing the directivity pattern of a loudspeaker and consequently the direct-to-reverberant ratio at the listening spot. Control of the directivity pattern is achieved by beamforming using a compact multi-driver loudspeaker unit. A small-sized cubic array consisting of six drivers is assembled, and per drive...

Influence of model parameter variability on the directivity filters of compact loudspeaker arrays

2845 Sound directivity control is made possible by a compact array of independently driven loudspeakers. Recently, a control system for such a multi-channel source based on its acoustic radiation modes has been proposed. These modes form an orthogonal set of velocity patterns on the source surface, and emerge from the eigendecomposition of a free-field radiation operator that depends on frequen...

Evaluation on flexible beamformers with curved-type parametric loudspeaker for spatial audible area design

In the fields such as evacuation guidance and entertainment, it is important for each listener to provide different sound information by using some loudspeakers in a same room. However, listeners have difficulty obtaining target sound information because various sound signals are mixed by using a general loudspeaker which has a wide directivity. To solve this problem, a parametric loudspeaker w...

Loudspeaker line array educational demonstration.

This paper presents a physical demonstration of an audio-range line array used to teach interference of multiple sources in a classroom or laboratory exercise setting. Software has been developed that permits real-time control and steering of the array. The graphical interface permits a user to vary the frequency, the angular response by phase shading, and reduce sidelobes through amplitude sha...
